The Americas cup is very topical at the moment and I am reminded of Sir Peter Blake’s successful 1995 Team New Zealand America’s Cup Challenge and how they had a simple vision and philosophy.

In his book “TeamThink: Team New Zealand: The “Black Magic” of Management Behind the 1995 America’s Cup Success”, Pete Mazany’s outlines the vision statement and guiding principles every member of the 1995 team signed and committed to.

VISION STATEMENT – Our aim is to build an Americas Cup Campaign that New Zealand can be proud of – To succeed in all aspects.

We want a small informed and fully motivated team that:

  • Works in an environment that encourages every member to make meaningful contribution
  • Has a high degree of personal integrity and group honesty
  • Recognises personal goals but not hidden agendas
  • Continuously monitors  and improves its performance
  • Is fun to be in

 Signed,     TEAM NZ 1995

I wonder if the 2017 team took on the same philosophy as they emulated their predecessors?

Too often in business today we over complicate what we are trying to achieve. We generate lengthy documents, visions, values and rules instead of keeping things simple and allowing everyone to work to their maximum potential.

Take the time to see how your team stacks up. Are you all on the same page?
